Homelessness in the United States
Homeless and other destitute people in our communities will find themselves having to spend their Christmas and New Years holidays without the traditional celebrations they look forward to. Many people will not have enough money to put food on the table or buy gifts for their children. They may not even be able to afford the bus fare to get to their local shopping centres. This is the reality of life for many of our most vulnerable members of society. We are here to help. Christmas Appeal 2019 Our Christmas Appeal is a way for us to make sure that everyone who needs help gets it this year. We want to give people the gift of hope and help them get back on their feet.
It is the time of year when I think about less fortunate folks. One thing that comes to mind is the homeless problem in the United States. When you look at the numbers, it's not like we are in the midst of a housing crisis but rather a homelessness crisis. Many people on the streets have a mental illness, drug addiction, or other issues. The United States has a high rate of incarceration. A lot of these people have lost their jobs and their housing. Many have no place to go. They've been sleeping on the street.
In some cases, they've been forced into shelters. The shelter often kicks them out because there is no room. When I see the enormous amounts of money that we give to other countries to sustain war actively, I think back to all the things we don't do for our nation's poorest and most susceptible people. Here are a few ideas. We could invest in public education. We could provide primary health care. We could put an end to poverty. We could create jobs. We could make sure that there is enough food on the table. We could make sure that everyone has access to clean water. We could build affordable housing. We could do much more to create a country where no one is left behind. Instead, we spend over $100 billion yearly on war and military spending while investing little in those things that would genuinely help our citizens.
I want to be better in 2023, so I'm looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint and ways that I can give back to the community. Rebuilding the Black community starts and ends with us. It also starts with addressing the needs of the homeless and America's most vulnerable. As we address these challenges, we must be intentional about investing in people and places that have been left behind. It is the first in a series of blog posts on how to invest in rebuilding our communities. We will explore the causes and solutions to our issues, including homelessness, Illiteracy, Black unemployment, Black under-employment, and Money Management.
